David Fincher (Chosen Director) - Contextual Research

David Fincher

David Fincher is a 54 year old American Film Director, and also a Film Producer. He is well known for his work on 'Fight Club' (1999) and also know for being instrumental in the creation of the U.S television series of House of Card. David was born in Denver, and moved to California at a young age. When he turned 18 he went to work for John Korty at the Korty Films in Mill Valley. From then on he went to directing TV commercials and music videos after signing with N. Lee Lacy. He then moved on to big productions at an older age.

Not a lot of directors have done as much for the art of a title sequence as David Fincher. The Filmmaker's work really helped kickstart the title design of the 1990s. From the doom of Alien 3 and the electrical inner workings of Fight Club, and also the very majestic imposition of Panic Room, the director's title sequences are as distinct from one another as they are distinctly the works of Fincher. This is one of the things that makes Fincher different from other directors. He really spends his time perfecting title sequences to make sure they are perfect.

David Finchers most notable films;
  • Alien 3
  • Se7en
  • The Game
  • Fight Club
  • Panic Room
  • Gone Girl
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
  • Zodiac

David Finchers directing style;

David has a big ability to indulge his viewers within the illusion of a film, and he always makes sure that it has a long-lasting effect on the viewer. It is Fincher's unique style of experimenting with the odds. Fincher makes us realize that how we, as human beings have indulged ourselves into something that we love so much, without realizing that everything in this world is temporary. He is an incredible filmmaker, he reveals a mechanical process at the core, which is art.

David Fincher is a fantastic director, what i find interesting about his work is that he always uses Blue/Green tints in his own productions. Lighting is a key feature in his own projects and that really inspired me to do exactly what he does. In Fight Club he always uses moody green tints which really give off a creepy atmospheric feeling, i feel like that is brilliant. Using colours and tints to create an atmosphere for your scene and to make sure that your audience feels involved in the scene. I also really love how he uses simplistic details in his productions to express the characters emotions and also as i've mentioned before how their simple costuming makes such a huge difference.

The Scene i have chosen

This scene is absolutely brilliant it really expresses David Finchers directing style. He really shows the real emotions between the two characters as they become one, he really makes us as the viewer realize that everything is temporary in this scene. This scene is very artistic and also very simplistic which i love, there is quite a lot dialogue but between the dialogue we have a few flashbacks which are brilliant visuals within the scene. I also love the setting the scene was filmed in and how the narration really expresses the characters emotions.
