Julie Plec - Contextual Research - Screenwriter

Julie Plec

Julie Plec is one of my favourite screenwriters ever, she wrote and co-produced one of the most popular TV shows on CW 'The Vampire Diaries'. Plec developed The Vampire Diaries which was originally adapted from a novel written by L. J Smith. Plec was the writer, co-developer and executive producer for Vampire Diaries. The TV series is an american supernatural drama based of fictional characters such as Vampires, werewolf's and witches. Julie Plec was always into supernatural creatures and fictional stories, she has also co-produced 'Scream 2/3' and also wrote 'The Tomorrow People' Julie Plec really saw something special in the novel 'The Vampire Diaries' and decided for it to become a TV series. From the day of the 'Pilot' (2009) episode release Vampire Diaries has been going strong and has been creating a big fa n following. Plec writes mostly romance dramas, The Vampire diaries revolves around a girl called Elena who falls in love with a mysterious vampire but is torn between him and his brother, when Plec introduced the character Damon who was played by Ian Somerhalder everyone tuned in, Ian swept the entire audience and Plec knew she made the right decision. Plec was very picky at making sure that the show has the most perfect actors that portray the characters from the novel perfectly.

Here is Julie Plec being interview about the last season of The Vampire Diaries. This interview is absolutely spectacular. 'Welcome to the beginning of the end' She says, Plec decided to name every single last episode for season 8 from her favourite quotes also from season 1; which i find absolutely brilliant. It is very nostalgic and smart for her to do this because it instantly draws the audience in. What i love about Plec's writing is that her characters always end up the same as they did in the beginning. For example, Damon never cared how many people he killed or what got in his way, he would rip into people no matter what; of course in the middle of the show we receive a caring character who has gone through change and finally has a care in the world, but what we get in the final end is the same character that we knew in the beginning. This shows that no matter how hard you try, the reality is, it is almost impossible to change and Julie Plec really expresses that in Vampire Diaries, not only in Damon but other characters too. Once again Plec teaches me to always face reality in my own personal work.

The Cast of 'The Vampire Diaries'

What is really important in Vampire Diaries is the strong dialogue that the characters have, Plec always includes a strong connection between characters through heart warming conversations within the script, she really knows how to make the audience feel for the characters. Plec has not only gotten me hooked but millions of other people too, I am so attached to pretty much all of the characters that i cry watching an episode. Julie Plec has really attached to to some of the characters because of how real their relationships our within the show, if one of them dies or gets hurt it make me wonder if i can carry on watching without them. She has really developed the story as of it being so different in the novel. Elena in the novel was bleach blonde but Plec did not feel as anyone who auditioned for the part of Elena was as good as Nina Dobrev who was naturally brunette, Julie Plec wanted to take the risk and it couldn't have worked better. Plec has also inspired to to not always go with what you have planned take risks, do not always follow whats written down because that might not be the right way to go. This episode from season 4 absolutely gives me shivers every-time i watch it, Nina Dobrev's performance was absolutely spectacular, it made you feel so many emotions, i connected with Elena in this scene so much because almost everyone in this world has lost someone and feeling Elena's pain is absolutely awful. Plec really wanted to express the loss of a family member in a way that the audience will be shocked that Elena turned off her humanity, meaning she will never care for anyone again. The none diegetic music and darkness really represents the sadness and loss that Elena just experienced, it really puts us there as an audience to feel what she is feeling. Julie Plec wrote this so perfectly it couldn't have gone any better.

Knowing Julie Plec has done so well with Vampire Diaries she knew one day it would have to end so she created a spin off called 'The Originals' another supernatural drama. This is based off a family of vampires who have made appearances in The Vampire Diaries, Plec has really developed that series now too and will be focusing on The Originals after The Vampire Diaries ends in March 2017.
