Major Project Pre-Production | Director Research - Hearts of darkness

Being a Director is a very difficult job, not only do you have a lot of responsibility in order to shoot the project but you also have to create your cinematic vision.

Heart of darkness a filmmakers apocalypse, I first heard of this documentary from Simon - he mentioned that it's a brilliant watch and It really relates to the kind of documentary I will be filming. The directors here were Eleanor Coppola and George Hickenlooper, Eleanor is actually the wife of Francis Ford Coppola. The documentary shows the making of Apocalypse Now (1979) and the struggles they faced throughout filming such as script, shooting, budget, casting and nearly destroying a life and career of the celebrated director.

The wife who was the director of Heart of darkness really wanted to tell the story from her perspective, it was a personal journey for her. It really links in with my documentary. Eleanor narrated the documentary which made it so much more personal, she also shows up on screen to describe the move in more detail for the audience. Eleanor narrates the documentary to provide security for the audience. Narration can spur on new thoughts and convey emotion using only their voices. I admire how she narrated the documentary from her perspective, seeing her husband face struggles and explaining them to the audience. This is how I want to narrate my own story, even if there is pain I want to explain to the audience the situation we are in.

I felt pain when I was watching this documentary, the way the lighting was used and the interviews were very straight to the pain. Eleanor is an experienced documentary filmmaker who is uses different types of techniques in her storytelling. One of them being the strong narration in her projects. She was just recently a director of 'Paris can wait' which is a 2016 comedy - it was her narrative directorial debut since all of her previous efforts were documentaries. Most of her documentaries were based on Apocalypse now, either she would document the way it was filmed or how it was edited etc. Eleanor used the award winning movie to her advantage of making fantastic documentaries, and it worked.

Most of the documentary you see a lot of behind the scenes footage from filming, as the audience you can see everyone getting manipulated. It is very entertaining, but then again some of the point in the documentary do not convince. Some people say that the production got out of hand since it's presented that way in Hearts of darkness. Eleanor wanted to show the audience the truth behind film making and how difficult it can be. I admire the way she presented herself, the way she exposed the movie and narrated the storyline for us. Without her narration I would be lost, it would just be a behind the scenes of the movie - which is not what we want.
